International School on Biological Crystallzation

May 22nd to 26th, 2011 - Granada, Spain

March 28, 2011

This International School will focus on the fundamentals of crystallization from solutions and its applications to the field of the crystallization of biological materials.

The School will provide five days of lectures and practical demonstrations related to the crystallization of biological macromolecules, biominerals and biomimetic materials, with one full day devoted to case studies on the crystallization of membrane proteins, viruses and large macromolecular complexes.

The School is intended for postgraduate and postdoctoral students as well as for research scientists from industry and academy that deal everyday with crystallization but look for fundamental knowledge on the behaviour of crystallizing solutions. The language of the School will be English. Grants are available.

The School will be held from the 22nd to the 27th of May 2011 at Hotel San Antón in Granada.

Topics of the School

  • Nucleation : Classical and non-classical approaches
  • Crystal growth kinetics and mechanisms
  • Properties of macromolecular solutions relevant to crystallization
  • Screening : The search for crystallization conditions
  • Crystallization techniques : Batch, Vapour Diffusion and Counter-Diffusion, How do they work ?
  • Crystallization and diffusion transport : gels, microfluidics and microgravity
